3. The Sweet Milk (Custard)
-
2 cups Whole Milk
-
1/2 cup Sugar
-
2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
-
2 tablespoons Melted Butter
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Make the Dough In a bowl, mix your flour, baking powder, and salt. Use a fork or your fingers to crumble the 6 tablespoons of cold butter into the flour until it looks like small peas. Stir in the 3/4 cup of milk until a soft dough forms.
2. Roll and Fill On a floured table, roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Spread the 4 tablespoons of softened butter all over it. Sprinkle the 1/2 cup of sugar and the nutmeg evenly on top.
3. Slice it Up Roll the dough up tightly into a log. Cut the log into 12 slices. Place the slices flat in a greased 9×13 baking dish.
4. Add the Milk Bath Whisk the 2 cups of milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, vanilla, and melted butter together. Pour this entire mixture right over the rolls in the pan.
5. Bake Bake at 350°F for 35 to 45 minutes. The rolls will soak up the milk and turn it into a thick custard. The tops should be golden brown and a little bit crispy.
Why this recipe works:
-
No Yeast: You don’t have to wait for the dough to rise. The baking powder does all the work.
-
The Custard: Unlike cinnamon rolls which get frosting, these create their own sauce while they bake.
-
The Nutmeg: This is the specific flavor that makes it “Southern.” It tastes like a warm hug.
