Classic French Onion Soup (American Style)

Step 1: Caramelize the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for 35–40 minutes until they become deep golden brown and caramelized.

Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Step 2: Build the Soup

Pour in the white wine and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.

Add:

  • Beef broth
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Thyme
  • Bay leaf

Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Season with salt and black pepper.

Remove the bay leaf.

Step 3: Toast the Bread

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast for 5–7 minutes until lightly golden.

Step 4: Assemble the Soup

Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls.

Place 1–2 toasted baguette slices on top of each bowl.

Generously sprinkle with Gruyère and Parmesan cheese.

Step 5: Broil Until Golden

Place the bowls under the broiler for 2–4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly browned.

Step 6: Serve

Carefully remove from the oven and let cool for a minute before serving.

Enjoy this warm, cheesy, restaurant-style French Onion Soup with extra crusty bread on the side.

Tips

  • For the best flavor, don’t rush the onion caramelization process.
  • Gruyère is traditional, but Swiss or mozzarella can be used as substitutes.
  • Add a splash of sherry for even richer flavor.
  • Serve with a fresh green salad for a complete meal.

Creamy, cheesy, and packed with sweet caramelized onions, this classic French Onion Soup is the ultimate comfort food!
